I am so excited I get to teach you English! I love languages and literature!
I have a bachelor of arts degree in English Literature from The University of North Dakota, my home state. After much searching I finally settled on this program because I realized my favorite thing to do is read and I want to share that with others! I also have a master of arts degree from New York University in International Education. I love to travel and learn about other cultures, through this I have learned the dramatic and positive impact education can have on developing nations. This is why about three of my five years of teaching have been in international contexts to English Language learners.
I have taught reading and writing outside of Accra, Ghana with a non-profit in an indigenous fishing village. I used a lot of poetry to help teach reading here because poems are short and students can feel successful after reading and comprehending them much more often than trying to read a chapter book. It was also fun to use writers and topics that they could connect with more – for example Maya Angelou and Langston Hughes.
For the last two years I have been teaching at the elementary level in Casablanca, Morocco at an American School. Almost all of my students are English Language Learners and because of this I have to use many different types of teaching to ensure that my students are successful. This sometimes means I have to be extra silly and act things out or do research on how I can better support my students.
I am so looking forward to meeting you and helping you become a successful English speaker!
